The Seychelles Institute of Management will celebrate its 30th
anniversary this year. During those 3 decades, SIM has undoubtedly played a
significant role in training and developing today's Seychellois managers. In
fact, most senior managers in Seychelles have at one time or another crossed
the threshold of the SIM.
Since its inception the Institute has always been part of the
main Government structure operating as a division of either the President's
Office or a Ministry. As part of the
public sector reform early 2005, SIM was given the status of a parastatal
organisation and as such the autonomy to chart its future course.
These are exciting times at the Institute and in Seychelles, in
general. A national training institute
takes its cues from Government's development agenda in that capacity building
efforts must be aligned to the country's directions and needs. To be relevant a national training institute
and in particular a management and leadership institute must listen, and hone
in, to Government's priorities if it is to successfully prepare people to move
in an effective direction.
As part of the Government's restructuring programme SIM's mandate
has been extended and expanded to include all the economic sectors in
Seychelles and to go beyond traditional training and development to consultancy,
research and policy development and analysis. In these days of globalisation we
are looking beyond our border and seek to be recognised as a regional leader in
management and leadership development.
Our
strength is our experience; we are as old as the Seychellois nation in that we
have experimented and learned on the platform of a new state. We have played and continue to play an
important role in nation-building and we have given development our best shot.
Today and tomorrow we are looking beyond the possible and want to
move beyond development. The step ahead
is to be the quantum leap that will open up opportunities to take us to the
next stage. We may have to take the road
‘less travelled by' (Robert Frost) but therein lies the excitement and that's
when work really becomes fun.
About SIM
The Seychelles Institute of Management is the premier management
development institution in Seychelles. Starting as a unit in the Department of
Finance in 1977, it has grown with the nation, changing and adapting its
mandate to meet national needs. Today
the Institute offers a range of training opportunities, consultancy and
research services aimed at building personal, professional and managerial
capacity of Seychellois to enable them to lead and participate positively in
the country's future thrusts.
Idyllically poised on the hills of Ma Joie its environment
provides an atmosphere conducive to learning. The Institute has a core of
qualified and practice-oriented facilitators.
It draws experiences from both the public and private sectors in
Seychelles and internationally thus enabling its programmes to be flavoured
with special blends of local and global nature.
Our aims
In the years ahead, SIM aims to achieve even higher standards of
quality and relevance in the services it offers. The institute aspires to play
a vital role as:
A focus and resource base for the personal
and professional development of all levels of management in the public, private
and parastatal sectors;
A forum for sharing knowledge and experience
to help senior managers act as creative and effective leaders;
A source of advice and assistance with
organisation development for institutions of all kinds in Seychelles
A centre for research and new thinking in
management practice.
A platform to promote improved services
within the public sector.
Our facilities
The institute is equipped with a good range of teaching
facilities. We have 3 purpose-built
air-conditioned rooms with white board, LCD projectors and screens. Other audiovisual
aid is also available.
There
is a computer room which can hold 18 students at any one time. Registered students have access to computers
and the internet for their work and a good range of software packages is
available. SIM's library although modest continues to grow. It contains basic texts to support teaching
in all management and professional subjects relevant to the Institute. There
are plans to develop a library and additional classrooms on an earmarked site
within the grounds.
